Dark Fantasy week!

June 14, 2025

I’ve come across several fascinating works with a Dark Fantasy aesthetic that I’d like to share.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

This is a film from the year 2000 based on the manga Vampire Hunter D. It’s got all the coolness of vampires, and all the darkness and fantasy that define the Dark Fantasy aesthetic.

The story follows our protagonist, “Mr. D”, as he tries to rescue a human woman from the clutches of a powerful vampire.

I’m a big fan of The Witcher saga, and I was struck by the similarities between the two stories.

I recently watched Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s really interesting to see the impact that early works have had on shaping entire genres. Some might see them as overly derivative, but to me, it’s fascinating to observe the similarities and differences between Bram Stoker’s Dracula and all the works it has influenced over the years.

Tenshi no Tamago (Angel’s Egg)

I discovered this film thanks to Dark Souls III. I read that a lot of the imagery in the game’s ending was inspired by this movie.

I definitely need to rewatch Tenshi no Tamago. It’s a film open to interpretation, there’s very little dialogue, and it’s incredibly original and beautiful in both its visual style and atmosphere. There really aren’t many anime like this. If you liked Evangelion or are a fan of Dark Souls, you absolutely have to watch it. :)
